Where do I start. We booked the Atlantica Grand for a 'luxury' break and were sadly disappointed. We booked a hire car from the airport and arrived before the transfer coach - a good move as we checked in quickly but those arriving on the coach were queuing out of the doors when they arrived. The receptionist was very pleasant and (apart from the shock of having to pay 210 Euros in tourist tax) this experience was fine. The first disappointment was that the funicular lift was out of action. The hotel is built on a steep hillside with the 'main block' at the top and accommodation blocks built down the hill. The funicular lift transports guests from there room level up to the 'main block' and down to the beach. We thought this was just due to bad weather but subsequently found it had not been working for a while. As our room was at the bottom of this hill, half a kilometre down a steep slope, this meant having to use the golf buggy service. When we wanted to go up, we had to phone reception (generally easy but sometimes no response) and ask for a buggy. We then had to walk to the buggy stop and wait for the buggy to arrive - often only a few minutes but sometimes rather longer. To come down, we had to request a buggy at reception and again wait for the buggy. The 'buggymen' were brilliant, but it was rather inconvenient and also meant the only way to the beach was to walk down (and back up the steep hill) The room was as pictured, although we had booked a double and got a twin with the two beds pushed together - but made up as two singles rather than a double. The pictures had clearly been taken a while ago and the furnishings were tired. The room size was excellent and the view superb though and we had a good sized balcony. On the first evening, the shower was only luke warm but this did improve. Housekeeping was hit and miss. Sometimes, they would refill the (4) coffee pods. Sometimes not. The glasses and cups never matched and often dirty cups and glasses were left. There were always clean towels though and sheets regularly changed. The air conditioning didn't cool. We did mention this to reception and they sent someone to check it - but all he did was turn the temperature up to 23 degrees and it still didn't cool. A few days in, at 1am, we awoke due to a storm, and found the room flooded, to a depth of about an inch. Rainwater was pouring in through the front door of the room. We called reception to report this. The receptionist said the porter was busy helping other guests and, as we knew we would get soaked moving to another room, we said we would stay until the morning. He offered to send some towels (which would have been a bit useless on the 600 odd litres of water!). A number of rooms on various levels were flooded. The 'buggyman' suggested that the flooding was a known issue which the management 'needed to do something about' We spoke to reception and they offered us a room change or they would clean it all up. We elected for the latter and when we returned to the room it was largely dry, although the air was moist and clothes damp. As a result of the rain, we also had water leaking through the shower extractor and called maintenance. The guy came quickly and sorted it, but left a mess which we had to clean up. The restaurant was poor. Excellent, friendly staff (mainly Filipino) but it was buffet style and food was often not very hot. The variety was good and it was well presented but got very boring. Only limited drinks were available - a few wines (but not a comprehensive list), beer, carton orange juice, Coke and lemonade. It was less a case of going for dinner and more like sitting in a canteen - eating to sustain rather than enjoy. We wanted to eat in the a la carte restaurants and had a booking - which was cancelled when they closed them for the last week - due to 'unpredictable weather' apparently, when the weather was beautiful. I suspect, as the hotel was quite empty by that stage, it was more a case of closing because they had limited bookings. We thought we would try tavernas off site, but they were closed! Entertainment was poor - subjective I know, but singers who kill songs, a DJ playing tracks for his pall to bang the bongos to and so on. Not great We did contemplate a spa day - but the prices were ludicrous, even though they were offering end of season discounts. The gents toilets in the main reception (which served the bar area as well) always stank to high heaven, despite the fact that they were cleaned regularly. There were often sewerage smells across the complex. The main grounds were well tended - but the path leading to the room was certainly not. There were weeds growing through the block paving. The bin was never emptied and sand, washed down in the storm never moved. Generally a bit of a disappointment. Great staff. Great views - and that is about it
