I'm a bit late writing this review, but as I'm doing a few other ones, I thought i'd take the time to review here as I've been meaning to. We stayed here early-mid May for two weeks with our 4 year old. First, our room placement was pretty bad. We booked a Deluxe Swim Up room, but received a room that never got sunshine on the porch area, it made it pretty chilly on some days where we'd have liked to have some sunshine; kinda defeats the purpose of sunbeds. The water was pretty cold, but was fine if the sun was shining - kinda expected at that time of year. A fair warning though, if you're looking for somewhere to swim comfortably as an adult, these pools are not it. I can't remember the exact depth, but everywhere is very comfortably walk-able, meaning as an adult, and tall at that, swimming properly was pretty difficult. I don't know if it was a different experience in the activity area pools, but where we were, they were all shallow. The room was decent quality, not the best, but good enough. They were mostly clean but there were cobwebs in corners and under bedside tables. If you are looking to upgrade to Deluxe for the restaurant access like we did - please don't bother. I know the main restaurant gets very busy, but we actually preferred going there in the end. While friendly, the staff had no real clue how to wait on the place. You are given two starters, regardless of whether you will like the food or not - this resulted in wasted food. You don't get to choose these. The mains were OK, but often cold, small portions and far lower quality than expected. The staff also couldn't time between starters and mains, sometimes bringing out mains a few minutes after the starters, or the opposite and taking ages. I may sound entitled here but there were never offers of refills on drinks either, something you can do as many times as you like in the main restaurant. For a deluxe restaurant that you pay more on the room for, it felt like it was run on a shoestring budget. Speaking of the main restaurant; food quality was better than the deluxe restaurant, far more choice; the drawback is that sometimes you'd walk by and notice a huge queue waiting for a table. The kids choice of food was a little limiting too, especially with a child who is a picky eater. The food truck was decent, and Debbie (I think that's her name) was incredibly upbeat and friendly. In the end, we did spend some time outside of the hotel eating in local places because the food was much better (and often cheap) and the environment was much calmer. The drinks around pools were also hit and miss. The drinks are tiny, meaning you can finish them in no time meaning you'd have to keep going up again and again. Sometimes the drinks were just awful and a couple of the staff manning the bar in the deluxe area just couldn't make a decent drink - it's not like the menu is extensive either, it shouldn't be that difficult - but here we are. The football academy, we booked 4 sessions (which was risky) for my son expecting he wouldn't enjoy it after the first session; however he loved it. He was often by far the youngest of the lot and occasionally had to do things on his own, but he was engaged for the full 2 hour sessions and did really well. My only small issue was that I think he struggled in the games at the end, he doesn't really 'get' football yet and chases the ball, so you could see him get frustrated and upset (and probably his teammates too). But all in all, thanks to Stu who was fantastic with him, Chloe (I think that's her name, sorry!) who usually does the swim academy but took him aside to do some shooting in the first session, and any other staff I didn't see do the sessions with him. He loved it in general. He also went to kids club a few times and really enjoyed that and would ask to go to other sessions. I do have a criticism of that though, the booking in could take anywhere between 15-20 minutes, maybe longer on the odd occasion. Perhaps having two people on the checking in for that would drastically speed that up, especially when there were loads of kids and parents waiting. It was done on one day and was noticeably faster. It's highly noticeable on sessions where you spend up to a quarter of the session time waiting for him to get inside. The evening entertainment, we went to a couple of times, but he was generally disinterested in it so I can't really comment on that. I will say, putting cartoons on, visible from the main restaurant was somewhat annoying when trying to eat, because he gets fixated on things like that and does not eat. The shop was pretty good, we would often nip in there to grab some snacks, a bit more convenient than going off site. The waterpark was ok. It was good for kids and my son loved the things he could go on. I did try the bigger slides myself and was disappointed; for example, the long slide, I got stuck on halfway down, probably not enough water flow, and had to scoot myself to the bottom. The steep slides were fine, but if you're on the taller side, the pool at the bottom just isn't deep enough and hurts when entering the water and slamming on the bottom. This isn't the first Atlantica we've stayed in, but it was the first holiday village. Both Atlantica's have been quite a let down compared to our expectations based on the money spent; we came away regretting our choice and thinking we probably should have gone back to Mexico for cheaper and a better quality experience. Our experience has now put us on the path to trying Villa's instead of hotels.
