Official Description

This charming hotel is located opposite the enchanting Fort-de-France bay on the west coast of Martinique. The airport is around 20 minutes away by car. Built in the style of the East India Company, the peaceful hotel building is part of a former family residence from those by-gone days. The hotel retains the original and authentic atmosphere combined with a warm hospitality. The reception area with its rattan and wooden furniture sets the elegant tone. On offer are a total of 139 rooms spread over buildings of one or three storeys, kept in the Creole style. The hotel's restaurant Le Chaubriand offers a view over the bay of Fort-de-France and serves an excellent international cuisine. A more relaxed, Creole dining experience is to be had in the La Sirène restaurant near the beach. The Coco Bar is located on the seaside and offers snacks. The Le Gommier bar offers wheelchair access.

Beach Chair Scam – Be Careful What You’re Charged For

We visited Hotel Bakoua to enjoy the beach with some friends during a cruise stop. Before sitting down, we specifically asked a staff member (wearing a blue and white uniform) whether there was a charge for the beach chairs. He told us that only the covered or cabana-style chairs required payment — the regular lounge chairs were free. Based on that information, we used two lounge chairs for a couple of hours. When we were getting ready to leave, my wife was unexpectedly presented with a bill for $80 for four chairs — including two empty chairs near us that we did not use. Since I had ordered food from the restaurant, she assumed the charge was for that and paid the bill. When I realized what had happened, I immediately contacted hotel management to dispute the charge. Unfortunately, they refused to assist us. The manager stated she had to attend a meeting and walked away without resolving the issue. This experience felt dishonest and extremely disappointing. As this hotel appears to be a popular stop for cruise passengers who are only there for a short time, it’s concerning that situations like this can happen. Thankfully, our credit card company refunded the charge after we disputed it. I strongly advise future visitors to clarify charges in writing before using any beach chairs — or simply bring a towel to avoid unexpected fees. Unfortunately, based on our experience, I would not recommend this property. Please be cautious.

Not even given the remote possibility of experiencing Martinique...

Would have been nice to even get to Martinique, period. Buyer beware! Please do not book your trip with this hotel in combination with an Air Canada Package, as there is a secret third party that calls the shots. The reservations people are kind, but this third-party company owns some of the beds at this hotel, and ACV has them controlling your trip! If anything goes wrong or you need to make a change, it will not be accepted, and you will lose your entire trip package! Travel insurance does not cover a company forcing you to forfeit your travel package, nor does your credit card insurance. Don’t be out of 5,500$ like us. Save yourself the incredible stress, the countless hours spent getting nowhere on the phone (over several weeks), and the chagrin of not being able to afford to go anywhere else in the near future. It should have been a 50$ small adjustment to the booking made on the hotel end, but instead cost us so much more.
