The Merengue dance is synonymous with the Dominican Republic, and at the end of July the Festival De Merengue kicks off. It’s a two-week celebration of dance and music that takes place in Santo Domingo. There are events throughout the city, but the Malecon (pier) is a focal point where you can expect demonstrations, competitions, bachata and other Caribbean influences like salsa.
Equally active but a festival of a very different kind is the Cabarete Kite Festival which draws in kite surfers from around the world to the Dominican Republic. Held in Cabarete on the North Coast, it’s equal parts spectacle, lessons and competition, all topped off with beach parties and music.
La Romana is a great base if you want to experience the Merengue Festival in Santo Domingo. There is a fantastic selection of resorts in this beautiful corner of the island, including Casa de Campo Resort and Villas, Bahia Principe Grand La Romana and Hilton La Romana Adult Resort.
Punta Cana offers a range of activities for the active traveller. Try out one of the many fine golf courses – golf enthusiasts are really spoilt for choice here or go in search of the marvellous aquatic creatures that reside in this area. Discover dolphins, turtles, manta rays, sea urchins and even Humpback Whales. There are many snorkelling and boat trips in Punta Cana to help you get up close to these magnificent creatures.
In July, the Dominican Republic has an average temperature of 28°C, with highs of 32°C and lows of 24°C. The chance of rain is relatively low with an average of just 4 days of rain in the month. To avoid the humidity, Punta Cana and La Romana, to the South East, can be a little cooler than other parts of the island, and the sea breeze helps to moderate the humidity.
