Rustic, Romantic, Relaxation

Transportation was on time and the driver was nice. Upon… Show more arriving at the resort, we were met by a hostess with cool towels. We arrived towards the end of lunch time so she directed us to eat first and then get checked in. Check in process was fairly smooth. There was only one porter that drove a golf cart to assist with luggage so guests checking in (or out) would need to wait for him. We stayed in cottage #24, it was up the hill and then we had to walk down a good number of steps to reach the cottage. The bedroom room was spacious and the wall AC unit kept it cool enough. The entryway and bathroom were hot, but not unbearable. The shower was outside. Ours did not have a light. At first I was nervous about that, but the light from the bathroom shinging through was enough. There full size bottles of Soap, Shampoo, body wash, and conditioner available. I think all the cottages have great views and you can see the sunset each night (if not cloudy). We didn't get a plunge pool, and If I could do it again, I would have gotten one. Housekeeping seemed to be coordinated with our eating breakfast. They did a good job with replenishing washcloths and towels and mopping the floors. You may have to request minibar refills, we did. The food was really good. We enjoyed a variety of dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the Main Dining room. Chef Faye and her staff do an amazing. The portions are adequate and didn’t lend to overeating. You can get more than one appetizer and entree if you want to try different dishes. The servers were super friendly and accommodating. A few standout servers: Nicolette, Hazel, Shelly Ann, and Phylicia. We found the drinks to be hit or miss. Every bartender did their own thing, but we found our favorites. Kerryann & Nikisha at the Sunset Grille were AWESOME and we made it a point to visit the grille and get drinks from them. At the Main Dining room, Omarion made good drinks, and he was a good entertainer too! From reception, Keana, Anishia, Dana, and Latisha were helpful during our stay. We had a chance to meet the managers and they were accommodating and made sure to make our stay memorable. The resort is right on the beach, and there are two you can use. Seats get claimed fast, so go right after breakfast. We did eat at the Sunset Grille a couple of times and there are cats that roam around looking for food, but aren't bothersome. There were flies though, and they just disrupted the enjoyment of the meal. At the beach, there are vendors trying to book you for jet skis. If you're interested, there are a few to choose from. The resort is about a 15minute walk from a grocery store. We walked there to get some snacks for our room. The staff, the food, the views...all amazing! Show less

Anniversary celebration in beautiful Antigua

We stayed for 10 nights and had chosen a… Show more sunset view cottage without a pool as I didn’t really see the need for one those. It’s also a costly upgrade and when the beach and sea are a beautiful as they are, that does us just fine. Location The hotel is in a beautiful location on a hilly outcrop of rock overlooking the bay with stunning beaches on either side. Being situated on the western side of Antigua you also benefit from the calm Caribbean Sea and is more sheltered from the winds that come if off the Atlantic. There are some quite steep paths and lots of steps, so if your mobility is more limited then perhaps look elsewhere. The accommodation is detached cottages and depending on what you choose there are views along the beaches, gardens or out across the bay to the west where the sun sets. As mentioned before, you can also have a plunge pool on your balcony. Cottages The cottages are basic and are of wooden construction with most if not all being on stilts due to lay of the land. Our cottage was a sunset view and was a walk up the hill from reception. It was clean and comfortable with the things you need. Programmable air conditioning, a large comfortable four poster bed with mosquito net drapes, a fridge with beverages of your selection (when you complete the online form) which is restocked daily. Fresh water, coffee and tea making facilities and a nice large balcony with chairs, small table, a hammock and an amazing view. We didn’t have any major issues with biting insects, but the hotel does provide an anti-mosquito body spray. There is plenty of hanging space and storage for clothes and a safe for your valuables, hair dryer, iron etc. Plug sockets are US 110v. There’s no TV, but if you’re that keen to watch something the WiFi is very good throughout the resort for streaming and video calls. The bathroom is simple, two sinks, toilet and the shower is outside with a stunning view without being overlooked. We are easy going and take things as we find them. If you are looking for 5* luxury, this is probably not the place for you. It’s rustic or shabby chic which may not appeal to some, but we love it! Ambience Our family are grown up, so we want a resort that is for adults only and does not have a party atmosphere or feel to need to constantly entertain their guests. We want to relax and unwind on a beautiful beach with warm turquoise seas and not have to anything to worry about. This is very much a couple’s resort, although we found on both visits that American couples come together to form social groups (which I have no issue with), it’s just at times on the beach it got really irritating when the drinks start to flow, and they just got louder and louder ruining the tranquillity. That’s when it’s time to relocate or go for a walk. I would add that there is musical entertainment every evening which doesn’t go beyond 10 (I think), it wasn’t our thing, so we went back to our cottage after dinner. Beaches There are two stunning beaches that stretch out either side of the resort. Valley Church beach to the south and Jolly Beach to the north. Valley Church was our favoured location, and we’d always get our loungers and sun shelter when we headed down around 10am. Towels are available from the beach bar on both beaches and neither beach was especially busy. Valley Church Beach has the Sunset Bar which is the ideal watering hole with a BBQ for a lighter meal which suited us most days for lunch. The beach was a delight to walk which we did once or twice a day. We’d see Hawksbill Turtles popping up for air, small Stingrays and even the odd Spotted Eagle Ray close to shore. On the other side of the hotel is Jolly Beach. There is also a bar here, which offers snacks like paninis. The beach is longer and is adjacent to the Jolly Beach Resort Hotel, so there are more people around. That said in June and July when we previously travelled, the beaches were very quiet as peak season is really from October through to April. Behind is Jolly Harbour which is a lovely residential area and marina for those with the bank balance to support it which has a few shops, bars and cafes, and some excursions run from there too. There are beach traders offering jewellery, clothes, seafood, water sports and excursions and they are all very friendly as you’d expect. I didn’t find them especially pushy, but I guess it’s how you respond to them. It was always the same traders, so it’s not like it’s a free for all. That said, on our first visit two years ago in late July, on one day when a cruise ship came in to St Johns, the passengers headed out to the beaches and excursions. For the day to around 4pm, the beaches are a lot busier and that attracts the traders too. Thankfully during our stay in June there were no cruise ships in town. Food and Beverages The main restaurant overlooks the bay to the north and to Jolly Beach and it’s a fabulous outlook. All meals are ala carte, it’s not a buffet. Breakfasts were fantastic and we only ate once in here at lunch on our final day, but again was excellent. Evening meals are on a rotating week basis with a different menu per day Monday to Sunday. Plenty of choice typically 3 choices of starter, main and dessert with specials most days too, all of which were excellent. The menus are viewable via the hotel website. Each beach has its only bar offering food, Valley Church has the BBQ and Jolly Beach paninis. Again, the menus viewable online Being all-inclusive, this means most of the drinks are included, but if you want some of the finer wines for example, that’ll cost you more. That said we were not disappointed with the included beverages be it soft drinks, cocktails, beer or wine. Staff We found all the staff to be lovely and friendly, whether the ground staff, room maids, reception to bars and the restaurant. On our anniversary day, petals were put on the bed along with the 30, but a slight error with the restaurant who got the date wrong for our champagne dinner. No worries, we had it a day late. Conclusion We highly recommend Cocos Hotel having been there twice. The first trip was amazing and the second did not disappoint as we perhaps feared. It’s not to everyone’s tastes and it’s not cheap. Some may have higher expectations based on the cost in terms of luxury, but it’s not a luxury resort. We love the rustic basic feel, but ultimately, it’s clean, the food is good quality, the staff are friendly and it’s in an amazing location with beautiful views, beaches, and turquoise seas. We don’t need all the unnecessary fixtures and features you get in top luxury resorts. Will I go back again? I am thinking of a multi-centre trip to potentially include Cocos and somewhere on St Kitts and Nevis Show less
