Excellent Except the Food

31 Aug 2026
This is our fourth trip to the Maldives in four years and we've stayed in other comparable prices over-water villas at other resorts. We picked Athuruga for the house reef and because our first choice was booked and the price was discounted. Got the all inclusive package. Arrival went smoothly since the new international airport recently opened and there. was NO waiting for immigration because we did the pre-arrival form online. The seaplane terminal was a different story and we waited 3 hours and the new terminal did not give free food. and drinks as in the past. The flight was over a half hour and we were dropped on a pontoon raft, from which the resort picked us up. The greeting and check-in at Diamonds Athuruga was good and our over-water villa was fantastic and had the most indoor space compared to the others we've stayed in at other resorts. The mini bar was free and there was champagne and a fruit bowl, A very thoughtful design, was that the air conditioner was down a short hallway, above the front door, and did not blow cold air over the bed. The villa was clean and the toilet was in a seperate room with a urinal, to save water, I guess. The shower was in its own room, with a lockable door, to the deck, so you could come in directly from the ocean and shower off. There was a second shower with a full stream of water to wash snorkel gear, sand or, for another person. We never ran out of hot water. The steps down into the ocean were kept clean of slippery algae. The villa was cleaned twice daily, unless you put out the "do not disturb sign" The only thing the villa did not have that the other villas we stayed in had, were underwater lights that you could turn on at night to see the fish, which are attracted to the lights. There were long sliding doors with two sets of curtains, facing the deck and you could forgo the AC at night and leave the sliders open to get the ocean breeze and sound of the wave. Five stars for the villa-it was the best and very quiet. Our main interest is snorkelling and usually 3 hours or more a day depending on weather and tides. Diamonds Athuruga had the best reef and it was close, so we didn't have to swim 20 minutes, each way to get to the drop-off. Very little current during the tide going out and we swam around the entire island in about two hours. Most of the Maldives coral were been killed some years back during a heat wave, but at Athuruga, it was all growing back and in relatively good shape compared to the other places we stayed. We saw the usual critters, lots of reef sharks, only one turtle, lion fish, morays, rays, and lots of fish. Another thing we were happy about, was that Athuruga allowed night snorkelling, which most place do not. At night we were disappointed because we did not see any octopus or lobsters, but saw a humongous shark, crabs, nudibranchs, and a sea snake. Only went once at night in the four nights we were there. We both have 3mm wetsuits, gloves, booties, and two underwater lights each. If you want to snorkel for hours, the wetsuit is a must as you will otherwise get cold, and I tried my 1.5 mm wetsuit but got cold after an hour or so. The water was clean with no trash. Five stars for the reef! Lastly, our big disappointment was the food. The quality, amount, and variety of the food sucked! Okay, we understand that August brings lots of Italians, and I'd guess that three quarters of the guests were Italian on some kind of cheap vacation bought through a travel agent. I don't expect the same, pizza and pastas, every. lunch and dinner. The was a barbecue with a few types of fresh fish and sometimes beef or pork chops, but the wait was over 20 minutes and they ran out of pork chops, the night they had them, and out of beef another night. No Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Thai, and very little Indian. I missed the dosas at breakfast. No shrimp, roast beef, lamb, burgers, prime rib, or anything that was more expensive. Who makes potato lasagne with mashed potatoes instead of ricotta? Eggplant parmesan was a mishmash of chopped eggplant and veggies with a little parmesan cheese on top. I actually gained a kilo I four days because there wasn't enough meat or fish to fill up on and I had sub par pizza every meal. The coffee was excellent, as you would expect at a resort that caters to Italians and even some of the wait staff spoke Italian. The food was one star and why we will not go back. The outside restaurant on the all inclusive was better, but the menu didn't change and the portions were small. Was staff were prompt and friendly. Food was one star!

Almost Perfect

31 Jul 2026
If you're looking for a Maldives island that checks almost every box, Diamonds Athuruga might just be your perfect match. The trifecta: · A top-tier house reef with vibrant, healthy corals and abundant marine life (a rare sight these days). · A beautiful white-sand beach that feels amazing to walk on barefoot. · A stunning lagoon where the blue shifts from pale Tiffany blue to deep navy—all in one view. It's not easy to find an island that delivers great house reef, sandy beach, and lagoon views all at once, but Athuruga pulls it off. Beyond nature: · Location, excursion options, restaurants, villas, greenery, and service are all solid. · Off-season rates are very reasonable—great value for what you get. Verdict: If you want a mid-range-priced island with excellent snorkeling and no major weak spots, Diamonds Athuruga is a strong contender. --- Biggest highlight: The island has its own Marine Lab with resident marine biologists, including the renowned Inga Dehnert. While most resort reefs in the Maldives suffer from severe coral bleaching due to climate change, Athuruga's reef remains remarkably healthy—thanks to their ongoing conservation efforts. You can even join a coral planting activity—a meaningful and memorable experience. --- Biggest drawback: While the on-island staff are friendly, helpful, and efficient in person, the pre-arrival booking process is a different story. Errors in reservations are common, and online communication channels are often unreliable. So don't expect a hassle-free experience before you set foot on the island—it may not go as smooth as you'd hope.

Let’s go back <3

30 Jun 2026
Our first trip to the Maldives could not have been more perfect, and we owe that to the incredible team at Athuruga. From the moment we arrived by seaplane, we were greeted with genuine warmth and kindness. Throughout our entire stay, every single member of the resort staff was exceptionally friendly, attentive, and welcoming. They made us feel at home from the very first day. The housekeeping team truly exceeded all our expectations. They paid attention to even the smallest details. At the beginning of our stay, we received two bottles of water per day. They quickly noticed that we drank a lot of water, and by the end of our holiday they were leaving eight bottles in our room every day without us ever having to ask. Our villa was always spotless, beautifully prepared, and cared for with great attention to detail. The food was outstanding. There was always a wonderful variety, and every meal offered something new and delicious to try. One of the absolute highlights was the grill station at both lunch and dinner, where fresh fish and perfectly marinated meats were prepared every day. Everything was simply delicious. The restaurant staff provided exceptional service throughout our stay. Our waiter remembered all of our preferences. After only a few days, he no longer had to ask what we wanted to drink—our bottle of sparkling water was already waiting for us at the table. As a woman, I especially appreciated the thoughtful gesture of him pulling out my chair every time we arrived. These small acts of kindness made us feel truly special, and we always looked forward to seeing him and the entire restaurant team. The bar team was equally amazing. The cocktails were excellent, the atmosphere was always cheerful, and every visit for a pre-dinner drink or an evening cocktail was a pleasure. Their positive energy and genuine hospitality made every evening even more enjoyable. The water sports centre was another highlight. The team made sure that every excursion we wanted to join could take place. We were especially impressed by the manager of the water sports team, whose respect and passion for the marine environment were evident every day. Seeing him politely but firmly remind guests to respect the reef and marine life showed how seriously the resort takes environmental conservation. We also want to give special thanks to the marine biologist. He was always available to answer questions and shared his knowledge with genuine enthusiasm. His talks and educational sessions made our appreciation of the underwater world even greater. Our beach villa was absolutely magical. We were lucky to have a fantastic location with direct access to the beach, surrounded by palm trees, soft white sand, comfortable sun loungers, and crystal-clear turquoise water. One day, the gardeners harvested coconuts from the palm trees next to our villa and kindly offered us fresh coconuts to enjoy afterwards. Moments like these made our stay even more memorable. The house reef is simply breathtaking. Every snorkelling trip revealed something new and fascinating. We saw countless colourful fish, reef sharks, turtles, and stunning coral formations. The marine life is beyond anything we could have imagined. What impressed us even more was how committed the resort management is to protecting and preserving this incredible reef. It truly is a paradise for snorkellers and divers. We had the most unforgettable holiday, and the only sad moment of our entire stay was the day we had to put our shoes back on and leave this little paradise. Thank you to the entire Athuruga team for making our first Maldives experience so incredibly special. We sincerely hope to return one day.

Best vacation ever <3

31 Jul 2026
Our stay at Diamonds Athuruga Maldives was truly the most incredible, relaxing, and unforgettable vacation we have ever had. From the moment we arrived, everything exceeded our expectations. The service was exceptional, and every member of the staff made us feel genuinely welcome. A special thank you to Abdula and Titu, Davide and the boy at the bar, who were incredibly kind, caring, and charismatic. They always greeted us with a smile, and their warmth made our stay even more memorable. Our room was spacious, beautifully designed, and impeccably clean every single day. One of my favorite features was the outdoor bathroom—it made the whole experience feel even more connected to nature while still offering complete privacy. It was such a unique and beautiful touch. We were also impressed by how peaceful the resort was. Our room was located very close to the restaurant, but we never heard any noise. We expected it to be busier, yet it was incredibly quiet and relaxing throughout our stay. That really impressed us and made it so easy to completely disconnect and enjoy the tranquility of the island. The diving team was fantastic—professional, friendly, and passionate about what they do. Every dive was an unforgettable experience. The spa treatments were amazing and the perfect way to relax even more, and the food was absolutely delicious, with a great variety and excellent quality at every meal. Everything was spotlessly clean, from our room to the restaurants, beach, and all the common areas. You can really see how much care the staff puts into maintaining the resort. We also felt that the resort offered excellent value for money. The quality of the accommodations, the outstanding service, the food, the activities, and the overall experience made every moment worth it. My husband and I absolutely fell in love with this beautiful island and its wonderful people. We are leaving with unforgettable memories and cannot wait to come back. Thank you, Diamonds Athuruga, for giving us the vacation of a lifetime!
