Positives and negatives. The hotel is in a lovely location with its own private beach. The accommodation, food quality and presentation were all very good, and the hotel staff were lovely, particularly in the dining room. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms quiet. We were staying on a half-board basis, which resulted in differing charging arrangements, depending on which restaurant you dined in. In the main "1962 By the Sea" restaurant, if you didn't want to choose a particular dish off the restricted half-board menu, then you had to choose at least two courses off the full a-la-carte menu, which you had to pay for, less a 15 Euro allowance. This allowance is frankly an insult - are they really saying that the value of the three course half-board meal is only 15 euros?! That amount barely paid for a starter on the a-la-carte menu. And why were we made to have a minimum of two courses off the a-la-carte menu? Why not mix and match? Then there was a "pop-up" restaurant, "Jerar". Here, if you were half board, you again had a heavily restricted menu, and according to our waiter, smaller portion sizes?! We also ate in "Antonino's" Italian restaurant, situated across the road. Here their charging method was much simpler. You could choose anything you wanted off the full a-la-carte menu, and against each item were details of any supplement you might have to pay if you were only half board. Drinks in the hotel were very expensive, and they clearly wished to discourage guests buying wines by the glass. For example one (modest) wine we liked was sold in 150ml glasses at a very pricey 18 euros a glass, (so equivalent of 90 euros a bottle), whilst a whole bottle was only 48 euros. The booking arrangements for restaurants were also a bit strange. All dinner reservations had to be made, regardless of restaurant, but we were often told we couldn't go at our ideal preferred time. Yet when you went to the restaurant at the booked time, many of the tables were vacant - I can only assume they have insufficient staff to cope with fuller restaurants. Other comments: Housekeeping was a bit inconsistent. Whilst the bed was made daily, on one day we received a disposable paper mat for each side of the bed, but after being removed the following morning, they never appeared again. Perhaps they are rationed! Sometimes we received new drinking glasses, whilst on other occasions used glasses were left uncollected. Occasionally we were provided with two bottle of spring water, other days four. And the bathroom floor was rarely mopped. Swimming towels for the loungers by the beach and pool had often all been taken, with lengthy periods before they were replenished. On several occasions I resorted to going to where the staff launder these items to pick up clean towels. I would urge the hotel to consider banning smoking on the balconies/terraces of each room. We had the misfortune of having a cigar smoker in the adjacent room, and the smoke drifted to our terrace and into the room if our patio doors were open. The hotel may also wish to consider having a separate breakfast restaurant for those staying the other side of the road, thereby easing congestion in the 1962 restaurant at peak times.
