Built into the rock this hotel is wrpped around the mountainside overlooking the river below; although you can't quite see the river for the trees. The feel of this hotel is very much in one with its surroundings, so it's all timber, roughcast plaster and terracotta tile. The lobby is vast, and by vast i mean look to the skies vast, 3 floors high before you see the ceiling. As with a lot of hotels in Sri Lanka the staff were super attentive from the moment you arrive......although this is the first place to try to immediately try the big upsell from the moment you arrived. For example. "Your room is the basic ensuite, for an ectra ***USD you can have a much nicer room". Our room was perfectly fine; and "you have the evening buffet included, but if you come to the 'special restaurant' where you can choose from a menu". Our buffet was fine. Had better and had worse. So really the immediate upsell was too much, and if the hotel staff are reading this, STOP IT. As mentioned the room was fine. The bed was comfortable, a celing fan kept the cool air from the AC circulating, and being on the 4th floor, poolside, we had a good view. The small balcony was a super bonus, and sat out there watching the evening thunderstorm was something else. The shower was ok. Not high pressure but warm enough. just two packets of coffee and 4 packets of tea seemed a bit mean. All in all an enjoyable stay....just cut back on the immediate upsell.
