Just spent a week at the Golden Mare Hotel, we didn’t have the best weather however this hasn’t impacted our view on the hotel. Pros: - The beds and pillows are incredibly comfortable. - shower is very powerful - The reception staff are incredible, really friendly and always willing to help - if we wanted more towels, iron etc.. it was always done within reasonable time. Cons: - The noise in the hotel if you are staying in the rooms close to reception (including 1st floor) is unbearable. We had to be up early for a boat trip and we rang reception to see what time the entertainment would finish just so we were aware of our expectations. Reception could not hear us, told us to call back. We did and same result so we went downstairs and was shooed away because they couldn’t hear us face to face. We don’t mind there being entertainment but when the rooms aren’t sound proof and you are laying in bed and the noise is vibrating your bed at 23:30 it wasn’t pleasant. - The food is average, I wouldn’t say there was a huge amount of choice. No greek options at all. Very same same every day and night. Lunch was used at dinner some time. We chose to look at what was available every night before heading out and paying for food elsewhere. Dessert was always incredibly disappointing. - The smell, there was sewer smells which is unfortunate. However we moved rooms and near our newer room there was the smell of animal poo. There were few cats lingering around the hotel. - The sun beds, they were made of wood and a couple of times handy men came around to repair them and was drilling whilst we were trying to relax. They aren’t very comfortable even with the cushion on the top. They are very worn down. - The pool, wasn’t the cleanest and also very very cold. - The drinks were awful. Not much choice, very cheap options and there wasn’t much care in how they were presented. Cups were dirty or had marks from dishwasher on them. Same goes for the cutlery. The soda machine sometimes only gives you syrup too. - The first room we had the surrounding shower was completely green. The metal was not looked after properly so has a thick layer of green mildew. - Cups were not picked up in the evenings and next morning they were still there. - Towels are incredibly worn and thin, some of ours had blood stains or were so worn they had holes in them. - Lighting in the rooms are not the best, first room it kept flicking all the time. It made the room very dull. - We are aware it’s advertised as not wheelchair friendly however it is advertised as family friendly. There is nothing for kids at the hotel to do, plus the hill the hotel is on it so steep it’s dangerous. Definitely would benefits from adding steps or a ramp with a railing to stop anyone from hurting themselves. I would not call this a 4 star and also wouldn’t come back personally. Even though the staff were lovely the facilities really bring the whole hotel down.
