As a first-time visitor to the Bahamas and solo traveler, I wasn't sure what to expect from the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar Resort. After five days there, it exceeded my expectations and was well worth the experience. From reading their marketing materials, I can honestly say it is everything it says it is. When you arrive, expect to check in at the front desk like any hotel. However, given the resort's size and the constant flow of guests, be prepared for a wait during the check-in process. The front desk staff was friendly and accommodating, which made the process more manageable. Once checked in, my room was spacious, modern, and very clean. I had a nice view of the ocean and tennis courts. The housekeeping staff was thorough and helpful when I needed directions or extra items for my room. During the day I was either at the beach, pool, or sightseeing. The beachfront is absolutely gorgeous - the white sand, sun, beach chairs, and food trucks all make for a perfect day. The property also has five pools to choose from, and you cannot go wrong with any choice - they are all fantastic. Lifeguards are on duty every day, which is very important for safety. Every night I went to a different restaurant, and I strongly recommend making reservations in advance since they're all quite popular and convenient. The quality of ingredients and freshness are second to none. I first ate at Shang Ba, an outstanding restaurant that focuses on Chinese cuisine. The wait staff was very knowledgeable about the menu and made great recommendations. The food quality was superb, made with very fresh ingredients. I ordered the conch salad, sweet and sour soup, and Peking duck, along with a glass of white wine. All that beach time definitely gave me a hearty appetite! My second restaurant I'd like to highlight is Katsuya Baha Mar, a Japanese restaurant on the property. I ordered delicious sushi prepared to perfection and impressive shrimp tempura. The sauces I requested to go with my meal were absolutely amazing. The service was top-notch and the server made thoughtful recommendations, which I appreciated as a solo diner. I also sat at the sushi bar, which made my dining experience even more enjoyable. I'd also like to give an honorable mention to Marcus Samuelsson's restaurant, Marcus at Baha Mar also located on the property. It's extremely popular, so definitely make reservations well in advance. The casino is located on the first floor, and every machine and casino table was packed every night. I am not that familiar with gambling, but I enjoyed watching everyone play and was on the edge of my seat watching the high rollers gamble. Some patrons were kind enough to let me play and gave me great directions too, which was indeed a pleasant surprise. The shopping there is also very good. Quite a few high end stores, my favs for window shopping were Cartier, Chopard, Mont Blanc, and Breitling. Another highlight of my stay was Jon Batiste's Jazz Club at Baha Mar. I had an absolute ball listening to the live music and people watching. The atmosphere was incredible - everyone was singing to the music, dancing to the beat, and dining while having a wonderful time. If you decide to visit, arrive early to secure a good table and enjoy a meal or appetizer with a glass of wine. I'd also like to mention that there's lots to see off property - be prepared to take a taxi everywhere or rent a car. Another thing, once you arrive at the airport, there are plenty of taxis available to take you to your destination and back. The downtown area is very interesting, and the straw market has a host of restaurants and small shops that you can explore. There are also other beaches nearby that locals hang out at and are naturally beautiful. The only cons I can think of: it can get pretty expensive at the resort, so have a budget in mind. Also, the gas prices are extremely high and taxi fares can add up quickly. As a safety precaution, like at any large resort, exercise caution at all times. Another safety measure - bring plenty of sunscreen because it is super HOT in Nassau! As I think about my stay, I had a fantastic time in Nassau. The people were friendly, the service I received was impeccable, and more importantly I was able to enjoy my time there without feeling rushed and was able to truly relax and unwind. This trip exceeded all my expectations, and I can't wait to come back to Nassau and the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar. As they say, travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer - and this trip to the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar definitely did that for me. Muah!
