We recently stayed at grand sirenis from April 15-26th with our 3.5 year old son and had an amazing time. I read almost every recent review to get a feel of what to expect before we went, and will outline what I feel to be a very thorough and honest review. this was our third time to Punta Cana but this is our first to the grand sirenis. We have been to the grand sirenis in mayan riviera 2 times in the past (12-15 years ago) I will start off by saying that I feel that The 1 star reviews are ridiculous. Nothing during our stay for 11 days, nor what any other fellow travelers told us that we met during our stay there would warrant a 1 star review. We stayed in room 4007, (building 40 room 07) on the ground level. The resort is divided into a few parts, our side was called cocotol or something I think, and I believe tropical was the other side and then the ultimate luxury side (which had its own pool and amenities) Our room was about a 3 or 4 minute walk to the pool and about a 5 or 6 minute walk to the lobby where the buffets are and where the a la carte restaurants were. It was a fine location although building 37 would have been perfect. The resort itself is beautiful. the ground keepers work hard to keep it manicured and clean and it was much appreciated. every day you could watch them climb the trees and throw coconuts down for the kids to drink out of The beach is beautiful, was clean and there was ample seating (granted not always under shade) through the whole day. we were lucky to have very little seaweed during our trip, but what little there was they had a big john deer beach tractor that picked it up in the morning. the stretch of beach is yellow sand, not the fine white sand you will find near bavaro. The water was beautiful although not picture postcard blue and calm like some areas in the carribean, so you can not really go snorkeling right off the shore. we didnt see any fish in the shallows like we have at other locations in caribbean. not a big deal. pool chairs and palapas are ridiculous to obtain. I hated doing it, but you had to play the game of getting up early to save a spot if you wanted shade as the covered seating was gone around 6 or 630. if it was just us I wouldnt care, but having shade with a toddler was paramount. We found the music to be a little loud around the pool but not a big deal. the sound tracks in the resort very repetitive. The water in the pool was amazingly warm and perfect for kids. for young kids it is perfect as most of it is extremely shallow up to the swim up bar, past that it immediately becomes 6.5 feet for the entire pool which is ridiculously deep and have never seen anything like it at any of the other resorts we have been to. the room was spacious and the cleaners were great. they cleaned our room before 10 am each day. and gave us new towels every day. I asked one of the cleaners for waters and coke zeros and beers the second morning and when I came back the entire fridge was full of 8 of each and 4 new waters. very much appreciated. each day I saw him he asked if I needed more. The lay out of the family suite room is really strange. We were excited to have a seperate room with a door that closed as our toddler still took naps during the day, however the area that closed off was the main king sized bed, so you had to try to sneak past him when you had to go to the bathroom. the ideal set up would have been for them to make a jack and jill style room so from the master you had direct access to the bathroom , and the door leading out of your room. I found most of the staff in the restaurants to be great. Maybe it was because we had a 3 year old with us? they would always come around and give him hi fives and fist bumps, and try to teach him spanish. He loved it Our concierge for our row of buildings was helpful. each day we walked by he asked if we needed anything. the one day our sink was plugged and it was fixed by the time we went for lunch. He asked us the first morning if we were interested in the luxury club breakfast, we declined, and he did not ask us again. I made dinner reservations on the app which was nice but could only book for the first few days. He booked me the rest of them the 2nd morning and was accommodating for us to get in earlier times for our little one even though the app said they were full. We found the japanese restaurant the steakhouse and the french to be the best of the a la carte restaurants. we did the steakhouse 2 times. I had the rib eye both times, my wife had the t bone and my son had steak fajitas one night and the ribs the other. the steaks were cooked to our liking and were really good (albeit a bit fatty) the wings in the starter basket here were amazing. we found the beach bbq to be hit or miss. there was standard burgers and hot dogs, but a lot of times no condiments like ketchup or mustard for them, and like some have mentioned, the burgers were often cold. If we timed it closer to 1 PM ish, they usually had a signature meal , one day was paella, a few days was charcoal grilled meats, one day was grilled fish. those days were really good, otherwise we went to the "el dorado" pool side lunch buffet. We found drinks hit or miss. The lobby bar is by far the best bar with the best selection of drinks. they had all the popular brands, and made a great blended chocolate martini. I found however that the bartenders here tended to be less friendly than other staff, and we had a few eye rolls when asked to make a drink like the blended chocolate martini or anything that took effort. a few days there were female lobby servers walking around. they were great and happy. and only a few days there were servers pool side, other than that you waited in line which usually only took a few minutes. the swim up bar was good, gets busy and sometimes takes a bit for service but the 2 guys there were really friendly. I felt bad for them as they constantly were splashed and soaked by kids jumping off the bridge, but they seemed to be good sports about it. the other bar by the pool beside the restaurant was good. sometimes the selection of drinks would change out of the blue, like one moment there would be brands like jim beam and stoli and then they would be gone and only have the house drinks (which in my opinion were not very good and all seemed to taste like some variation of tequila these changes seemed to be at a whim some times and not consistent. beer sometimes was warm and pop sometimes flat. ran out of coke and sprite for a few days. the frozen drinks were a bit disappointing compared to other Caribbean destinations we have been to in the past. lots of the time they were not really frozen (i get it its 30 degrees) the pina coladas were just meh, didnt taste "real" if that makes sense. The mexico grand sirenis had amazing frozen drinks and lots of times they were made in the blender with fresh fruit and coconut cream etc. It was nice that at the beach bar they had self serve nestea ice tea and water and juices which cut down on waiting in line for non alcoholic drinks during the day. I agree with some past reviews about the faint sewage smell some days. but honestly We have been to a lot of resorts through the Caribbean and have noted that several times in the past. the water park is out dated, we heard a lot of people complaining about how rough the slides were. we took my little guy to the kids side, however they have large buckets that fill and spill and spray tons of water all over the water slides every minute or so and it scared him, so he wouldnt go on them so we left lol. I didnt personally try the adult ones although they looked fun. It is a solid 3.7-4 star in MHO. If you are looking for white glove butler service like we have had at sandals and secrets then you will be disappointed. For the price we paid for 11 days it was an amazing experience and would consider returning if the price was right.
