I decided to get away for my birthday (not acknowledged by the hotel) and settled on Grotto Bay Hotel as it was reasonably priced. Upon arrival the lobby area and staff were very welcoming. Rooms: the rooms and bathrooms are very dated and in need of a refresh. Our first room in the 800 block looked dusty and any 'seaview' was obscured by overgrown foliage. The staff quickly moved me to the 400 block which was better but not at all luxurious. I also find it strange that rooms at this price point do not provide bottles of water in the room/robes etc. Food: Bermuda is ridiculously expensive for everything! The food in the hotel was mediocre and overpriced. I am not a fussy eater but I don't think that I had one decent meal in 6 days. On the International Buffet night, the ribs were bloody and raw but burnt on the inside by the bone, not great. I would suggest that instead of having two menus (of very similar dishes), have one short, well executed menu. I mean, how many salad variations do you need? Just state salad and add toppings? Bar drinks were great with true Caribbean measures! Facilities: I am 41 and travelled with my 37 year old brother and we were so bored and I heard others say the same. I understand that it is low season but nothing was open and there was very little evening entertainment. The place felt dead. We of course travelled in the day around the island but the bar, common spaces and restaurants just had no vibe at all. The jacuzzi was broken for all 6 days with no apology. Local Area: Swizzle Inn Pub, Blue Hole and the Crystal and Fairy Caves are close by and nice to visit. Bus stops are right outside the hotel and the transportation is easy to navigate. Staff: In general, very polite and helpful, especially those at reception and in the bar. One very very rude doorman who refused to help me call a cab to the airport and just pointed at me to use the app HITCH. Misc: Bermuda is annoyingly influenced by the American problem of tipping for every nonsense activity, so with the obligatory service charge, food and drink is very expensive. I would recommend the All Inclusive package if you plan to drink any alcohol. I calculated over the week and I saved significant amounts of money, only eating twice a day and drinking 3-4 drinks. Overall: I would not pay full price for this hotel as the quality does not match the price point. If you are used to luxury accommodation and treatment, this is not it. In my opinion it is overpriced 3 Star with few facilities and no buzz. For half price (which is what I paid), I was still not happy but a bargain is a bargain and Bermuda is expensive.
