We chose this resort to mark our 20th wedding anniversary as well as my 60th birthday earlier in the year. This is a beautiful resort on a natural island in the north of the Maldives. We were disappointed when our arrival seaplane was delayed, but that disappeared when we saw the staff all waving Hello on the jetty as the seaplane landed, with the golf buggies lined up to take guests to their accommodation. The seaplane flies directly to and from the resort. All guest parties are assigned a Thakuru (butler), whose role is to organise your restaurant and excursion bookings, change arrangements as required, and answer questions. Our Thakuru, Sabaah, greeted us with a welcome drink designed to combat jet lag (it worked!), and then he drove us to our villa. Sabaah was an excellent Thakuru who looked after us very well during our stay and checked in with us every day. The all-inclusive deal is excellent value for money. There are some buffet items for breakfast such as pastries and cereal, but otherwise, all restaurants are à la carte and meals are prepared to order, including cooked breakfast. The food is outstanding; cooked to perfection and well-presented. The food is very light and the portion sizes are just right, making it easy to enjoy a three-course dinner without feeling that you've eaten too much. The resort prides itself on its sustainable practices - as little plastic as possible, water filtered via the resort's own plant, reusable glass bottles and cloth beer mats, its own chickens, and vegetable and herb gardens on the island. We had an over water villa with its own pool. The villa was spacious, comfortable, well-appointed and spotless clean, and was serviced twice a day. The minibar is restocked once a day as part of the all-inclusive deal. You don't need beach towels - they are provided by the resort at every sunbathing area, as well as in your villa. The resort also provides flippers and a mask for the duration of your stay. The staff make it their business to know who you are and what you like. By Day 3, everyone knew our names and our drinks preferences, no matter which restaurant we visited. The breakfast staff had our coffees ordered by the time we were shown to our seats. No request is too much trouble for the staff, who are rightly very proud of their resort and clearly love working there. We booked a private dinner in The Cellar for our anniversary. The Cellar is the only underground wine cellar and restaurant of its kind in the Maldives. We enjoyed an excellent 7-course degustation meal, lovingly prepared by Moosa, the Executive Chef. We were given a beautiful chocolate cake at the end of the meal, and were treated to a floating champagne afternoon tea the next day (we requested to change the day so we were hungry for our Cellar dinner.) Moosa also conducts the Maldivian cooking class. This was great fun, very informative, and you get to eat what you cook. Another highlight was the Teppinyaki dinner. The chef is highly skilled and very entertaining. We were very sad to leave JA Manufaru, and will definitely be back. Highly recommended.
