I like this hotel. Yes, the decor is a bit dated, but so what; the rooms are large, warm in appearance and comfortable, which is also "dated" when you think about it. The staff are friendly and knowledgable. The location is spectacular and quiet. You are so far above the sea, you can't even really hear it, but you get some stunning sunsets. A car is almost a must, unless you are planning to do nothing, or just hike in the immediate area (which is entirely possible). The food ranges from good to okay, but the buffets have many options. Choose between indoor (heated) or outdoor pool. In warmer weather, the generous patio would be great. Parking is tight, but that's true just about everywhere in Madeira. One caveat: our mattress was very firm – much too firm for me (my wife was okay with it). My solution was to take one of the wool blankets, fold it and place it under the sheet, which helped a little.
