Fun Slides for the Kids But Understaffed and Lackluster Restaurants

Our family of four stayed at the JW Grande Lakes in Orlando for four days and three nights for Spring Break. The hotel is very beautiful and our boys absolutely loved the water slides and lazy river, but I would hesitate to stay at this hotel again. The hotel was extremely understaffed for Spring Break and the multiple conferences on site so there were constant waits for everything during our stay. Each morning there was a thirty minute wait to enter the breakfast buffet if you didn’t arrive before 8:30am. The wait for burgers and fries was nearly an hour Friday and Saturday afternoon and the pool chairs were all claimed by 11am each day so one day our family of four was forced to lay on the concrete because there wasn’t a single open chair. We luckily made dinner reservations each night of our stay, but I didn’t love the food at any of the four restaurants that we tried. Kitchen at the JW had great cocktails and appetizers, but the burger was not great (cheap meat and overcooked) and the shrimp po boy was bland and had tiny shrimp that were covered in too much batter. Cocktails and appetizers were amazing at Primo, especially the bread service, but our steak and the lobster bucatini were both under seasoned and disappointing. The worst meal was at Highball & Harvest. The shrimp on the kid’s buffet looked better than the tiny, overcooked and bland shrimp on my shrimp and grits. The macarons on my crème brûlée were stale. The best food was the poke bowl, fruit platter, and quinoa bowl at the pool restaurant, but the burger and the majority of the cocktails were terrible. While most of the food was disappointing I do believe that this is one of the nicest pools in Orlando, the Ritz has an excellent playground, and both the JW and Ritz have nice areas to kick a soccer ball or play catch. I would probably check out other hotels in Orlando before returning to the JW Grande Lakes.

Bad rooms other decent stuff

I don’t know what the JW Marriott chain stands for. Sometimes their hotels remind me of a plain old Marriott. Once or twice closer to a Ritz. Other times more like a Fairfield Inn. The name has little identity unlike its brethren. And this one is no different. The rooms may even be below a recently constructed Fairfield’s. They’re incredibly dark, with no central light and only a weak one above the bed. The lone couch had no backrest on one side of it (it was L shaped) and otherwise there really was no place to sit. The drawers were a joke. Two situated very low and they were excessively deep. If you have a bad back forget this place. The bathroom reeked of age, dressed up with a rainfall shower. Don’t come here for the room, that’s for sure. However it had a good central bar, wide open and plenty of seating with fairly good service. The lobby restaurant was excellent, again with good service and a nice wine selection. The restaurant downstairs which is the main breakfast spot was a bit dated both in terms of looks and food. The lobby itself was very open and light-filled but stained to be picturesque. Decent gym. If you’re a family the pool area is a dream. Water slide and lazy river and huge pool. If you’re alone or a couple go to the Ritz pool next door. You may even switch to the Ritz after seeing the mass of kids in the pool area and checking the rooms, and no one could blame you. The view from the lake side of the hotel is decent and more importantly that side is quiet. The other side looks over a busy road. Pay the extra for the lake side.

Wired sound and lack of functional furniture

We hear wired sound at night , couldn’t figure out from where. We stayed 3 nights, the last day we found it’s from the dark hole behind the speaker. We didn’t sleep well. We are 2 people and there’s only 1 chair in the room. We asked for a small coffee table or a chair so we can put one of our laptops on. I called 3 times: 1 st call, told me they are going to find something , then nothing happened; 2nd call, told me the same, then nothing happened, 3rd call, same…. At least they can tell me there’s nothing they can provide directly.

Was not impressed. For the money you pay per night the restaurant and hotel could have been cleaner. The lobby was very clean even saw someone cleaning the water fountain feature early in the morning we fly out. But the window in the hotel. The items left in the halls and the one restaurant we went to… could be better. Staff at the front desk never offered to have the case of water we ordered to be brought up to our room and when we ask for a cart they said they didn’t have one. Our room was quite a long walk from the elevator.

She assisted with taking information regarding restaurant reservations (for the concierge) and many logistical questions. I really appreciated her expertise! We are looking forward to our visit in March!
