The airline is paid when you book and the rest of your payments are held in a trust account, which is controlled by the Travel Trust Association. This is much safer than an ABTA bond, because your money can only be released to pay the suppliers for each element of your holiday, and and your ATOL protection safeguards the whole holiday.
