Official Description

This beachfront eco-chic bohemian hotel places its guests just meters away from the sandy strip and is the perfect place for a sun-soaked vacation in heart of Playa del Carmen since 1985. Its guests can reach the center of the resort, the restaurants, bars, pubs, shopping outlets and the tourist sites on La Quinta Avenida within a 05-minute walk. The concept of the venue is to provide the perfect conditions for relaxing and romance, so there are no TVs, phones or radios in the rooms. But to compensate for that there are large comfortable beds and private terraces with hammocks, where one can spend the warm afternoons with a good book in hand and a chilled cocktail by his side. If some extra pampering is needed the onsite spa center can provide a number of treatments and massages, which will surely nourish both the body and the mind. WiFi access is provided in the lobby, each guest´s room and the conference place. The property is part of Top 20 Travel & Leisure 2021 and Condenast Travel 2021. LGBT+ friendly and Small dogs/cats allowed on request with extra charge. Excellent place for groups and weddings. Everything was absolutely amazing. The resort is beautiful, the rooms are clean and spacious, the spa is gorgeous and the staff is superb! Daniel went above and beyond to take care of every detail for us. Keyla was wonderful with all of her activities for all ages. We felt very safe and looked after … extra Security at the beach and on the premises was comforting as we never had to worry about leaving our things on our chairs while we swam in the turquoise waters. Tropical elite has exciting excursions to choose from. The food is exquisite. And everything is reasonably priced. And to top all of that, you’re right in town so you can walk to the shops and restaurants (as opposed to being stuck in a remote resort)

I want to share our experience so that other people can know exactly what they are signing up for. We arrived at the resort, and our first thought was, 'This can't be it.' Sure enough, this was it. We received a warm welcome as we got out of the car from two lovely gentlemen. We proceeded to find the lobby to check in, and we quickly learned that this resort is completely outdoors with no air conditioning, including the lobby and restaurants. We had a little trouble checking in because they made several mistakes on their end, stating that they had undercharged resort fees. Normally, in my experience, if it is their mistake, they eat it. No, not the case, so we pay again. I'm going to fast-forward the rest, and the pictures will say the most. Our room was less than desirable. It was very primitive in a dirty way, and for what we paid, this is unacceptable. Pics below. We were in hut #8, beachfront king. It was right on the beachfront, but it was also a very public beach, which remained packed. Red flag when you see 2 sets of earplugs in your room. Needless to say, this place is not private at all. There were people right outside our room every night partying with very loud music. We were told there is nothing they can do about it; it's a public beach. The AC was comprised of two mini-split units that only blew air, not cooled it. When we complained, the maintenance department said they were working fine. It was a miserable sleep. It wasn't until our last night that our concierge came to collect his tip. He said the room was hot and definitely not like the other rooms. He offered a small fan for the "fix". I took pictures of the good, the bad, and the ugly as examples. Also, I would like to let you know that the food at the two restaurants, except for one steak, was inedible for me. It is not only flavorless it was hard and tough. Needless to say, I do not recommend this resort to anyone unless you like to sleep in complete heat and humidity and love a loud party.

A tropical paradise

We had the absolute best time staying at Mahekal Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico for most of August, and it was, hands down, one of the best travel decisions we've ever made. We used to walk by mahekal on the beach when we used to stay at another hotel and truly, had no idea how special this place is until we stayed there! August is considered low season, but that worked in our favor — the resort was peaceful, beautifully lush, and we got to truly immerse ourselves in everything it has to offer. We stayed in the penthouse room, which offered breathtaking views of the beach, infinity pool, and one of their restaurants. Waking up each morning to the sound of the ocean and tropical birds was nothing short of magic. But what made our stay truly unforgettable was the people. The staff at Mahekal are some of the most genuine, kind-hearted, and attentive individuals we’ve ever encountered. My husband, our 9-year-old daughter, and I felt so taken care of — like we were truly welcomed and looked after every day. A special thank you to Abraham, one of Mahekal’s supervisors, who made such a lasting impression on us. He checked in with us daily and went above and beyond for our daughter — surprising her with treats and organizing a beautiful early birthday celebration that she'll never forget. His warmth and thoughtfulness were a highlight of our stay. We also want to mention the incredible restaurant and pool staff — truly some of the best humans we've met! A huge shoutout to: Enrique (Qique), Manuel, Braian, Ana, Ignacio, Marco, Juan, Maria, Emilia, Annibal, Uriel, Ismael (barista/bartender), Camelia, Enrique (sommelier), Turillo, Armando, Alberto, and Robert — every single one of you made our experience so special. We dined at Las Olas and Fuego, and were genuinely impressed. For hotel restaurants, the quality was exceptional. The octopus at Fuego quickly became one of our daughter’s favorite dish! We also loved the Vacio plate at Las Olas. And thanks to sommelier Enrique, we discovered Xtabentún, an artisanal digestivo from Yucatán that we loved so much, we bought a bottle to take home! The resort grounds are stunning — five beautiful pools spread across the property, all tucked within lush jungle landscaping. What we appreciated most is how Mahekal is built around nature, not on top of it. We often saw quatis, wild chickens, and of course, tropical birds. It made the whole stay feel like a peaceful escape into another world. The rooms don’t have TVs — and honestly, I loved that. You spend so much time outdoors, that there's no need. It’s a place that really lets you disconnect and unwind. Our daughter had an amazing time with the activities team, and we adults got to join in the fun too — from morning yoga and water aerobics to salsa dancing lessons! A big thank you to Keyla, Marie, and Josue for keeping the energy high and the vibes fun.

Absolute beachfront boutique resort with exceptional customer service

I stayed at the Mahekal Resort for a girls catch up. The resort is boutique-style and very personal. It’s in a wonderful location right on the beach at Playa del Carmen and easy walking distance to many nice restaurants and bars. Aside from the location, the stand out feature of the resort is the customer service. The staff are the most lovely and attentive I have ever met in a resort. We had a butler Daniel who looked after us, and he went above and beyond with his service. Nothing was too much trouble and he made all of our dinner reservations, taxi bookings, and gave great advice on local attractions and also things to avoid. The restaurant staff always remembered our preferences and allergies, so it felt like we were really known and cared for. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. We had an all-inclusive booking and the food and cocktails were delicious. The pools were beautiful. We had a beachfront palapa which I highly recommend. Out front it had a daybed, hammocks, and table and chairs. During the day we had a beach waiter who served us from there. Some of the fixtures in the room were a little tired, like the curtain railings and tap-ware, but the first impression of the room is excellent and the bed and pillows are very comfortable. The room had a great beach feel and it was exactly what I was looking for. The only thing that could be improved would be a later opening time for the pools, which close at 7pm. The resort has great security and I always felt very safe, even when I was there on my own. I would caution tourists about some scams in the town, particularly around 5th avenue. I was scammed for a large amount of money using one of those small hand-held clip terminals. The guy grabbed my Visa card and put it straight into the machine without showing me the amount, and then told me that the transaction had not worked. I recommend buying things with Pesos for any smaller transactions to avoid the risk of card scams. I highly recommend the Mahekal Beach Resort and hope to return there with my kids next time. The resort was very kid-friendly. We also had an amazing experience where a green turtle came into the resort to lay her eggs. The staff were super respectful and protective of her which was lovely.
