Official Description

This beachfront eco-chic bohemian hotel places its guests just meters away from the sandy strip and is the perfect place for a sun-soaked vacation in heart of Playa del Carmen since 1985. Its guests can reach the center of the resort, the restaurants, bars, pubs, shopping outlets and the tourist sites on La Quinta Avenida within a 05-minute walk. The concept of the venue is to provide the perfect conditions for relaxing and romance, so there are no TVs, phones or radios in the rooms. But to compensate for that there are large comfortable beds and private terraces with hammocks, where one can spend the warm afternoons with a good book in hand and a chilled cocktail by his side. If some extra pampering is needed the onsite spa center can provide a number of treatments and massages, which will surely nourish both the body and the mind. WiFi access is provided in the lobby, each guest´s room and the conference place. The property is part of Top 20 Travel & Leisure 2021 and Condenast Travel 2021. LGBT+ friendly and Small dogs/cats allowed on request with extra charge. Excellent place for groups and weddings. We remind you $35usd Resort Fee and $1.6usd Environment Fee are going to be charged daily at arrival; The Service Fee $15usd night is applicable to All Inclusive plan only. $25usd Per night small dog Fee. The beach and 4 pools, 2 looking over the ocean were amazing. I love the relaxed vibe of the resort. Each room comes with 2 hammocks to enjoy outside on your porch or balcony. Food was amazing at Fuego Restaurant. The staff were so friendly and attentive, as well!

Mahekal translates to magical and once you set foot on the property you’ll see why. Stunning beach views and super comfortable accommodations. The best food of any all inclusive ever. Catch of the day should be renamed catch of the hour-Kingfish and Mahi Mahi were expertly prepared and stunningly fresh/delicious. Staff is genuinely friendly and seem excited to serve/provide anything you need. Special shoutout to Concierge Abraham who has this uncanny ability to anticipate what you need before you even communicate it. Responds hyper fast to requests. Can’t imagine going anywhere else. Book today!

They turned our wedding week (March 14 Wedding) into a nightmare so I want to warn every couple considering Mahekal Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen for their wedding. What should have been the most magical week of our lives was repeatedly hijacked by the gross incompetence and dishonest practices of this resort's wedding team. - They lost track of $10,000 we had paid SIX MONTHS prior. Completely unaccounted for on their end and rather than addressing this ahead of time, they put the onus on us to prove our own payment history to them when we were onsite for our wedding. - As if that weren't enough, they attempted to hit us with a $7,000+ penalty, claiming our room block had not been fulfilled through the booking code... despite the fact that we blocked 40 rooms and had 107 guests staying on property. One hundred and seven guests. The audacity of threatening a penalty under those circumstances is staggering when most rooms are double occupancy. We had to spend hours cross referencing the list on their end with the list of guests we provided them with months ago on the thursday before our wedding and proved to them that their website was set-up to confuse people. They finally conceded we had over 40 rooms booked through the web page but again we lost 4 hours to research this ourselves and track down the rooms of our guests that were not accounted for, the day before our welcome party. - Here is what is truly unforgivable: Mahekal had an entire MONTH after the room block deadline to identify and communicate these issues to us. Instead, they waited until we arrived for our wedding — surrounded by family and friends who had traveled from afar — to spring these problems of their making on us. We wasted time with their incompetent staff on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, AND Friday trying to clean up messes that were entirely their doing. It was only after we did the investigative work ourselves did they acknowledge they could not legally charge us. - The front desk charged us $930 for an "upgrade" that was explicitly promised to us as complimentary. When we checked in they said they didnt have us in their notes as the wedding party either, so there were not even little rose petals or a welcome gift or literally anything in our room. They did absolutely nothing extra or special for us after we brought >100 people there for our wedding. When I brought the upgrade charge up to Laura, the in-house "wedding coordinator," she showed me that their system had the upgrade documented as free... which was hard to believe but she showed me the screen and they literally documented it as free. I showed her the additional $930 charge on my credit card and she needed a whole day to figure out where this money went. She promised to work with the reservation team to return this to me, but she has not been responsive to me or my wedding planner when we followed up after my wedding so i am filing a dispute with my credit card company, which I let her know of today. - We didn't even get an adequate room with this *fully paid for* upgrade so I couldn't take any getting ready photos or have anyone with me because the AC was broken and the hair and makeup team were already complaining of the heat with just 4 people there. When we toured, Lucero showed a room with a living room which was not actually made available to me. Total bait and switch. I spent 9am to 1:30pm of my wedding day with just vendors because of this... They also do NOT have a bridal suite so another sign I wish I noticed that they are not equipped to handle weddings. - I specifically and clearly requested that mahi mahi NOT be served as the fish filet entrée option at our wedding and Laura said she would work with the chef... At our reception I took a bite of the fish and turned to my husband to let him know it was mahi mahi... he gave me half his chicken... - For our welcome party, we were charged $450 for three infused water dispensers — a "water bar" we had approved for our outdoor cocktail hour (where it made sense given the heat despite the open bar). Instead, Mahekal applied it to the wrong event entirely, which was hosted in a covered space with fans (La Cocina) and where we were already paying for a three-hour open bar. I personally didn't even see this water bar in La Cocina so I'm not even sure we weren't scammed. But if it was there, we paid $450 for flavored water jars at the wrong event because they couldn't even track a single add-on without messing it up. - Mahekal markets itself as a 5-star resort, which we knew was not the case based on our visit, but it was a good location, affordable for guests, and good aesthetic which is what drew us in. It's obvious now that we were shown updated rooms when we toured a year before our wedding. What we actually arrived to were cracked floors, broken air conditioning, and rusted toilets with corroded flush mechanisms. Again, it's a bait-and-switch, plain and simple. For context, we stayed at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba for three nights after our wedding to decompress from the stress Mahekal had caused us. That is what an actual 5-star resort looks and feels like. By comparison, Mahekal felt like a beach motel. Mahekal is not just incompetent, they are clearly playing by a predatory playbook: waiting until you are emotionally and logistically vulnerable to hold one of the most important events of your life hostage. We didn't concede because we work too hard for our money to hand it over to the likes of these dishonest people. I just want to add, this was my experience as someone who ALSO had a separately paid for wedding planner, which we decided on in November that Mahekal was not actually providing any true support. We went in thinking planning was all settled and had no warning that Mahekal was going to wait until our wedding week to cause all these problems. The individuals responsible for this horrible experience were Laura Elena Castellanos Patiño and Maria Elena Armenta. The only thing I wish for them is Karma.

Beautiful resort and the staff were excellent—friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Unfortunately, repeated noise issues really impacted our experience. There were events near our suite, including one night where a beach party went until 6 a.m., making it impossible to sleep. I emailed management about it and received no response. That lack of follow-up ultimately overshadowed what could have been a great stay.

Our hotel is located beachfront on the Caribbean with a wonderful white sand beach on the outskirts of Playa del Carmen, just a few steps away from the 5th Avenue. We count 195 oversized and comfortable resort style hotel rooms providing vacation accommodations and hotel lodging.
