We stayed in the cottages in March 2025 (the Royal Poinciana) for a little over a week. I'll start by saying that we truly loved the cottage as it's the closest to the beachfront and has two bedrooms/1.5 bathrooms. The cottage certainly needs updates but we found it to be charming and it had all of the necessities, including an awesome patio we enjoyed in the mornings and at sunset. The beach/beach club is incredible as well. We spent most of the vacation relaxing under the sun and swimming in the crystal clear waters. Thankfully the beach was our top priority for the trip so we were able to make the best out of our trip based on that. I will also say that the Copia restaurant serves amazing food and we really enjoyed the staff both at the beach club and Copia (really welcoming and kind). Keetel was a favorite as she made our breakfasts at the restaurant a really positive experience each time. As for the main issues with our stay. The overall theme is that the front desk staff are not helpful or welcoming at all. In fact, almost every time I asked a question they didn't provide correct information or simply didn't help. I think the main problem with our stay is that it felt as if the hotel was not prepared to welcome guests at the cottages. For starters, when we arrived, we were told on the spot that due to power issues at the cottages over the prior several days, our stay was moved to the mainland for the whole trip. Mind you, I had been in contact with the GM and other staff from the hotel for months prior to my arrival, including the night before. It was never mentioned that there were any issues or that our stay might be changed. I insisted that we stay at the cottages as this would have changed our entire experience and thankfully they let us go as originally planned. Note, we had one power outage our entire stay and it lasted about 15 min. The hotel also very easily sent other guests to the cottages throughout the week. I still have no idea why they initially tried to keep us on the mainland but it was the most unpleasant way to start the vacation. The next issue came up when on our second day, we left for dinner around 6pm to the mainland and had mentioned to the boat captain that we'd need pickup around 930pm, which he said was fine. We returned at 9pm asking to schedule a boat and were told that we would actually have to stay on mainland for the night due to high winds. We were NEVER informed of this being a possibility. The hotel didn't even have toothbrushes or phone chargers or anything to make the unexpected stay more comfortable for us. Thankfully they had a room available for us to sleep in but I could not believe they didn't have anything at the front desk for situations like this (by the way, they mentioned this happens all the time, just failed to inform guests staying at the cottages about this, a crucial point). We slept in our clothes from dinner, didn't brush our teeth and our phones died. Of course we understood the call was made for safety reasons, but to never have even let us know that this was a possibility or attempt to contact us as soon as the staff realized the conditions were becoming unsafe is insane (I was already texting back and forth with the front desk staff on Whatsapp so they definitely had a way of contacting me quickly and I know for a fact they knew we were on mainland for dinner). Thankfully after speaking with the GM the following morning, she gave me her contact info directly and I was able to coordinate everything through her going forward but I cannot imagine how dysfunctional it must have been for other guests at the cottages. However, even that bliss lasted for two days. After that, we had a water taxi pickup for an earlier morning due to a scheduled tour and they showed up 40 min late. I had called the front desk asking if the person was on their way and they said yes he'll be there in 10-12 minutes. 10 minutes later the GM texted me saying the boat captain was on his way to the hotel to pick up the keys and will come get us shortly. The miscommunication amongst the front desk staff, who are the first people you see when you walk in the hotel and are especially important people in coordinating your stay if you're in the cottages, is unacceptable. We constantly got contradicting information from everyone and quite frankly got so fed up with them that we opted to make our own breakfasts/dinners for a number of days so we didn't have to deal with them. Lastly, and I already sort of touched on it, but the hotel clearly doesn't have a good system for the water taxi service for the cottages. I had asked many many times before our arrival, and after I arrived, about how easy it is to get to and from the cottages. I was told each time that we could go whenever, until about 10pm. Let me tell you, the front desk staff made us feel like the biggest inconvenience when we were requesting rides. They later told us that the water taxi actually runs every hour from the mainland and every 30 min from the cottages (which doesn't even make sense) and that we were getting special accommodations because the GM was scheduling rides off schedule for us. THATS INSANE. This place has been open since 1958, it should have a good system for letting guests go to and from the cottages. Guests should not feel like an inconvenience to the hotel, the hotel should be making guests feel comfortable and helping make their stay as easy and relaxing as possible. Highly encourage the hotel to figure this part out as it made every ride request uncomfortable. Overall, it makes me sad that I can't give this place a better review. Again, the actual cottage and beach were wonderful and since we cared the most about that for our trip, we made it a great one. But with that said, I will not be coming back to this hotel and will not be recommending it to others due to the staff that made it really uncomfortable and unpleasant. The front desk staff need to be trained on better customer service and how to best accommodate people staying at the cottages. Most importantly, the staff needs to stop providing people with contradicting information. It's incredibly frustrating to not be able to trust what hotel staff are saying.
