The Pestana Royal is an All Inclusive hotel (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and domestic beverages) located in Funchal, Madeira. It sits 2 minutes on foot from Formosa beach, the city's largest beach, with panoramic views of the Cabo Girão hillside, 10 minutes from Funchal's city centre (by car). During your stay, you can enjoy 2 outdoor swimming pools,an open-air solarium, a SPA with indoor swimming pool, gym and 3 treatment rooms where you can book you Magic SPA treatment/massage. The youngsters can have fun at the Kid's Club or in the playground, while the adults play pool, mini golf or use the tennis court. The hotel offers 4 restaurants (1 open buffet for all meals and 3 themed restaurants, open at dinner time, alternately), promenades and 2 bars. All of them have a very relaxed atmosphere, this being one of the main features of this resort. All rooms offer pleasant views, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.

Glass walled bathroom a negative unfortunately

Positives: The hotel is extremely clean, The staff are welcoming helpful and hard working. The variety of food is plentiful with a good range of fish, meat and salad dishes. Pools are clean with ample sun beds and umbrellas. The hotel location is about 15 minutes drive or bus from Funchal. Lift access to the beach promenade gives access to some seaside cafes, walks and jogging routes. Good range of drinks available on the All Inclusive or pay a bit more for access to higher value spirit brands, Small indoor pool and relaxation area for overcast days or if you want a bit of quiet. Animation team are enthusiastic but not pushy. Music around the pool is generally at a reasonable volume with option to move to the lower pool to listen to your own choice of music or a bit or peace and quiet. Hotel employes a falconer with Harris Hawks to chase away the sea gulls and pigeons. The gardens are well maintained and the rare plants on display are tagged to help with identification. Specialist restaurants which were booked by a machine in lobby. If you are out for a day trip or have an early start the hotel will provide a picnic lunch free. Hotel provide a once day free shuttle bus into Funchal. There is a small shed sized Sauna and an outside Jacuzzi. Negatives: Our room (deluxe with sea view) was very small with limited storage space. The worse feature was the glass cubicle bathroom with no door. No privacy, if the room door was opened anyone on the toilet could be viewed from the corridor. If the bathroom light was turned on at night the entire room was flooded with light due to the glass walls. The restaurant was supplemented by two specialist restaurants which were available at no extra cost but have to be booked in advance (2 visits per week booked). The main restaurant as with all inclusive was a series of queues for food and weaving in and out of other diners. But no complaints over the food which was changed regularly whether used or not. Evening entertainment not much to shout about and the entertainment room which also housed the evening bar was excessively noisy although there is an option to sit in the garden outside. Be prepared to queue for the bar. General: Although there are lifts and slopes to assist those with mobility issues, this hotel has many, steps as it is spread over 10 levels. Due to the position of the beach lift there is no wheel chair access to the beach promenade. The bus into Funchal stops outside the hotel with a flat fare of 2 Euros per person. I would recommend upgrading your room to one with a proper (walled) bathroom.

The hotel is clean and looks well looked after. However, I think it only gets its 5 star rating because it has more than 1 restaurant. However to use the other restaurants you have to book or pay a lot extra. This seems odd for an all inclusive hotel. The food was good but very repetitive, almost the same every night. The service in the buffet restaurant started well but after the second day the service slipped and was very slow. There are only 2 bars but only one was ever open at a time. Pool bar during the day and entertainment bar in the evenings. But part way through our holiday the closed the only disabled access to the pool bar even though there was disabled people in the hotel. Later during our stay they closed another access which meant we had a very much longer way to get to the pool area, which was also a disabled access. This was, again, done with no notification. Some staff were really nice and helpful but some of the front desk staff were very rude and unhelpful. Information was not freely passed on to guests about things happening or changing round the hotel. Looks nice but actually quite poor.

I visited this hotel with my sister and my mother who's in her early 80's. This is NOT a 5 star hotel. Checking in, you are not given any information about the hotel. You are expected to find out everything via the QR code they ask you to scan. The hotel rooms are in need of an update, everything is tired. The beds are extremely hard and have a plastic sheet under the bed sheets! Me and my sister had a room with a small balcony, at the side of the hotel. My mum had a room same side and no balcony. We didnt have any problems with cockraches that other peoples reviews have mentioned. The bath towels are very thin and the bathroom is also dated. They did put a new showerhead whist we were there. The food in the buffet was ok, im a pescartarian, but not a huge choise. The booking system for the 'Speciality Restaurants' was hit and miss, but we eventually manged to book a night for each. The Botanic restaurant food was probably the worst meal we had, ever. I had the vegetarian (I can't even tell you what it was, but couldn't eat it), my sister had the fish (with sweet potato and banana) and my mum the tough beef skewers. None of us ate the food, we explained why, and then left to report this to reception who tried to contact the duty manager, but she was unavailable. We also booked the Italain, it was ok. During breakfast a couple of days later, the duty manager was walking around asking guests about their stay, and we told her about our experience, she seemed concerned, but never came back to us during the rest of the stay. Other negatives:- Poor evening entertainment (not 5 star) and loud, This is when we were glad we were at the side of the hotel, and not looking over the bar/pool areas. The Lift on the right side had a mind of its own, and my sister was stuck in it for a few minutes one day. Very used sun loungers, saggy and not particularly comfy. (small beach towels, restricted to 1 each) A water bottle is left in your room for you to fill yourselves. There was not water availble a couple of evenings, and another time the bottle was removed from our room altogether. The tables outside in the bar area were not cleared enough. Some drink you have to pay for, The staff were friendly in the buffet area and always cleared the tables quickly. All in all, I wish we had booked somewhere else as this is my mums only holiday since last year.
