Our stay at Semiramis City Hotel was excellent to say the least. We booked a half-board twin room for 10 nights. Arrived and was immediately greeted by friendly and welcoming staff, namely Michael at reception with a quick and easy check-in, followed by assistance with the luggage into the lift by Stefan. You will notice the staff have a constant smile on their faces throughout your stay and always make effort to answer your queries and assist you. One particular scenario I recall and appreciated was when my mobile phone charger broke, I asked to borrow a cable from reception to troubleshoot the issue and without hesitation, Savas and Evangella assisted me in a time of urgency and provided me with one until I managed to purchase one from the town later that day. This is the sort of trust from hotels that I feel is often neglected but not at Semiramis. Typical Greek hospitality you’ve come to know and love. Room was tidy, clean and comfortable upon entry with a nifty modern touch screen panel on the wall allowing you to select if you’d like your room cleaned or not to be disturbed. The air conditioning was a modern LG system with its own in-depth panel which you can set to your needs. Kept us cool all night under the 30+ degree well-loved Rhodes heat. Fruit bowl was stocked up with fresh fruit and housekeeping thoughtfully provided us with a small bottle each of bespoke Greek traditional red wine which we unfortunately didn’t drink sparingly and had emptied both bottles by our second night. The bedding was very versatile with a soft and hard pillow, a thicker and heavier throw blanket or a thin silky blanket to suit your sleep quality needs. Mattress was perfect for my taste but of course, it may not be to yours, so if you have any concerns over this, I have no doubt the hotel staff will sort this in utmost efficiency. The bathroom, which for hotel standard, was surprisingly well sealed and mould free. I must admit, it was difficult to get used to the practice of not flushing used toilet products but I hear this is the standard across the island and much of Greece due to infrastructure and NOT a hotel specific thing. It’s a good idea to respect this rule. We didn’t opt for a view featured room so cannot comment much on the balcony experience. We did have somewhat of a view of the bustling town in the distance which was quite pleasant to look at during sunset and the later evenings. Our balcony came standard with a table and set of chairs, enough to enjoy a game or two of cards, a few drinks or whatever tickles your fancy. The pool area was bright and uplifting with quality summer-esque music playing and clean modern sunbeds readily available. I was initially quite concerned about sunbed hogging and availability but in our 10 day experience, many sunbeds are free right up until midday and beyond. No worrying about getting up at 6am to reserve beds. One thing to note is that the amount of sunbeds may be considered small to some, but after some research, laws in Rodos have previously restricted the size of buildings and their features and have indirectly caused space limitations for some historic hotels. The pool was clear, clean and chlorinated, very suitable for kids with it being shallow. It’s more of a play pool rather than a swimming pool which is cogent considering the family orientated nature of the hotel. Lots of wildlife surrounding the hotel, butterflies, birds and even bitey bugs so make sure to wear bug repellent if susceptible. There is a small shaded seated area in the pool which was welcomed, although I feel this space could potentially be used to expand the pool further in the future if the hotel wishes to invest considering its popularity. The main and pool bars were, as to be expected for hotel bars, pricey, but the drinks we had purchased tasted fresh and were of a high standard. Well trained bar staff displayed great craftsmanship in the presentation of the cocktails. The hotel also has a great selection of signature cocktails that I feel are under appreciated. The Semiramis cocktail was particularly nice. The hotel entertainment was very enjoyable with traditional Greek events like ballet dancing and band playing. The entertainers actively engaged with the audience and promoted getting up together. Even some of the hotel staff joined in like receptionist Savas who made himself one with guests. Last topic of discussion is the incredible experience in the restaurant, in my eyes, the heart of the show. Savas, the restaurant manager was an absolute delight to see each day with his funny and welcoming yet still professional attitude. He is clearly very good at his job as the restaurant never seemed a mess or in chaos. The views from the windows showcasing the sea and seafront were beautiful whilst eating and really added to the atmosphere. Additionally, the food was always hot, fresh and delicious, we particularly enjoyed the variety of foods and culture specific nights. Asian night was great if you’re a fan of British Chinese food. On the other hand, the Moussaka and Greek style sausage and pepper mix were staple Greek dishes cooked by very talented Greek chefs. Compliments to the chefs! Deserts, as you can expect, well presented and delicious with a lot of variety. Savas and his team in the restaurant went above and beyond to make our time at Semiramis something really special and will forever be remembered. Finally, I believe a hotel with history has much more of an atmosphere and Semiramis has just that. To me, it didn’t feel like some common rapidly built-up corporatised hotel giant that you’d often find in tourists hotspots like Rhodes. Instead, Semiramis is a family run business with proven love and attention poured into it to make the atmosphere and community what it is. I’d highly recommend checking out the short documentary showcasing the rich history of the hotel on their YouTube channel. Thanks again to all of the staff at the hotel and thank you for having us.
