Tucked away in an eclectic area with lots of nearby dining options, South Gap Hotel is as described on the website. For a price just over $200 (US), you will get a clean room, friendly staff, and an amazing breakfast option in their downstairs area. The room itself is a bit of a squeeze, but has everything one could need. I downgraded from 5 to 4 stars due to some of the items in the cons list. Pros: - The price is right. - Safe, walkable area. (There are a few peddlers that may stop you as you walk, but they are friendly). - The food and drinks are great and reasonably priced. - The service and staff attendants are very friendly. Rose, in the dining area, was particularly friendly and brought exactly what we needed (even honey for my coffee!) - Kitchenettes are well-equipped (just small). - There is coffee in the room (but they are the instant packs, depending on how one feels about those). - Available for one-night option (great for a quick airport stay). - Air conditioning in the rooms is efficient and the temperature is easy to change with the remote. - A ceiling fan is also over the bed to keep the air moving. - There are ice trays in the little freezer, as well as plenty of washable drinkware. Cons: - Although 3rd-party-sold rooms such as on Expedia may get stuck with some of the noisier areas (I would double-check with the hotel, because they were vague when I inquired in advance. The email reply said "subject to availability" when I asked for a quiet room). We did not get a quiet room even though I requested one and booked direct with the hotel. - There is only a top sheet placed on the bed upon arrival. A very small lightweight cotton throw was folded up in the closet, but we could not find a true bed blanket or comforter. And we were really tired after a super long flight, so it would have been great to have a duvet or real blanket. We didn't have the energy to chase one down. - The shampoo/conditioner isn't a separate amenity-- it's a 2 in 1 product-- and the communal containers can be opened and contaminated if the wrong person decides to play a joke on the next visitor. The communal toiletry containers also did not have a brand listed or ingredients listed, which was a little cringy in my humble opinion. I have a sulfate allergy and so I avoided their toiletry items, since I didn't know what was in the container or who had used it previously. Eek. - There is no swimmable beach area. The surf is really rough and not clear, light water like the Caribbean is known for. - There is a pool area, but it is very small and has just a few loungers in the immediate area. - Can be noisy if you get a room near the stairs and walkway area (I would not recommend rooms 115/114, if you like quiet and privacy). Room 114 was *right* next to the patio and tables/umbrellas, and so curtains drawn is necessary for privacy, which is a shame. - There is only one chair for seating in the room and so eating a meal is a bit tricky. We had one sit in the bed and one sit in the chair. Good to know in advance: - Not well set up for families/kids, in our opinion. The rooms and areas are very compact. It was mostly couples and girls getaway type groups that were at the hotel. - There are a couple of good mini-marts for staples, and a couple of coffee places, that are easily walkable from the hotel. "Cake Lady" was a great little coffee place that was walkable from the hotel and had homemade bakery items. Amazing coffee! - $27 (US) for a taxi from airport to hotel - $30 (US) for a taxi from hotel back to airport - Taxis are plentiful in the SLG area. - There are plenty of kitchenette items in the room, but you will need to bring your own drip coffee grounds and purchase creamer/milk (if you do not want the instant coffee or prepackaged coffeemate non-dairy creamers) - There are no napkins or paper towels in the room for the kitchenette. It might be good to grab some. There is a sponge, liquid dish detergent, and lightweight dish cloth for the sink area. - Starbucks is a 19-minute walk if you are so inclined. - We loved Harlequin (next door) for dinner.
