⸻ I stayed at Wyndham Altra in Playa del Carmen recently and had a mix of good and not-so-great experiences. First, the good: my flight arrived early, and the front desk staff were very kind and let me check in ahead of time and use the facilities. I appreciated that a lot. The location is also great—just a short walk from Quinta Avenida, which made it easy to explore the area. That said, I wouldn’t recommend this resort for solo travelers. Even though it’s adults-only, which I liked, it really feels more geared toward couples and groups. The lobby is simple, and it’s connected to a small bar with just a few stools and a view of the pool. The main buffet-style dining room is also small, hot, and doesn’t have much atmosphere. The pool has a central bar called Agave that splits the space into two sides. Most activities happen on one side, but there are about 23 cabanas blocking the view. I ended up renting Cabana #1 for $135 on a Saturday, which included a bottle of liquor and a meal. I got the liquor—but never received the meal (ossobuco). The first server, Orlando, was great, but after his shift ended at 4 PM, I was left waiting over an hour for the next server, Oscar, to show up. For a solo guest, it just didn’t feel worth it. What surprised me most was how invisible I felt. The staff engaging with people around the pool, including the photographers, never once acknowledged me or offered to take a picture. It felt like unless you were part of a couple or a group, you were overlooked. There are four restaurants that require reservations, but no one told me the Italian one was closed on Saturday. The food overall was fine, just not memorable. Also, while this is an all-inclusive resort, I noticed a lot of the service felt tip-driven. I only had a carry-on and didn’t need help at check-in, but because I said no to the bellboy, I ended up getting lost finding my room. The same happened in restaurants—if you weren’t tipping, service could be slow or indifferent. I usually don’t carry cash at all-inclusive resorts, so this felt frustrating. I still had a nice time visiting Tulum and enjoying the sun by the pool, but I wouldn’t return to this hotel on my own. Maybe with a partner it would be different, but as a solo traveler, I just didn’t feel welcomed or valued here.
