If laidback, underdeveloped and paradise-looking beaches are your thing, then the beaches of the British Virgin Islands are for you. With picturesque bays and hidden coves for exploring, the beaches here are what travel brochures are filled with. There's a bit of something for everyone, whether that’s complete seclusion on bright white sand with luminous blue water, or a more upbeat atmosphere. The British Virgin Islands really have it all
When imagining a perfect Caribbean beach, White Bay is exactly what you would expect to see. A crescent shaped shore with pearly white sand and turquoise waters shimmer as catamarans and sailboats dock at the bay. Spend your time snorkelling along the technicoloured reef, or kick back at the renowned Soggy Dollar Bar with a tropical rum cocktail, best enjoyed relaxing in a hammock. Often referred to as the BVI’s best beach, but we’ll let you decide for yourself.
Famously found on one of the BVI’s largest islands of Virgin Gorda, the Baths is a favourite for everyone. With the iconic granite boulders forming shelter over dazzling pools with caves ideal for exploring. What better place to bring your Robinson Crusoe fantasies to life. Best enjoyed in the quieter afternoons, and why not try the nearby Devil’s Bay and Spring Bay for a similar vibe with fewer crowds.
Pack your mask and flippers as this unspoiled spot has to make it on your to-do list. The sensational multicolour reefs make it too dangerous for a larger boat to anchor, meaning no crowds from any day-trip charters, adding to the undiscovered feel of the beach. The same reefs that hinder large boats make for some awesome snorkelling, and the surrounding almond trees create some calm and cooling shade to relax and take the weight off your feet.
Located bang in the middle of the capital, Cane Garden Bay is a real crowd pleaser. The crescent shaped beach is a popular setting for its clear-blue waters, perfect for water sports as surfers can rule the waves. The crystal white sand is a winner for sunbathing and the swaying palms and laid-back bars offer an idyllic atmosphere. Make sure to stay for sunset, then raise a Carib beer and dance the night away after-dark to some reggae at Quito’s Gazebo.
In the northernmost British Virgin Isle of Anegada, you’ll find sugar-coated sandy beaches, bluer than blue waters and delicious Caribbean lobster. Cruise the infinite shoreline on a scooter from Anegada Amazing Rentals to fully immerse yourself in all the beauty on offer. Once the activities have finished, head over to the Cow Wreck Beach Bar and tuck into a platter of traditional barbecue grilled lobster, with a refreshing mango daiquiri to wash it down with.
Another example of Anegada’s gorgeous offerings, Loblolly Bay is one of the Caribbean’s most sumptuous beaches, and even argued by some to be one of the best in the world! Try basking in mother nature’s glory on the dreamy, seemingly untouched sand that stretches for miles (we’re not exaggerating). Don’t forget to overlook the glistening ocean at the rustic beach bars as you unwind after a long hard day of relaxation.
Don’t let the name fool you, this beach is bursting full of life and beauty. With screensaver-worthy good looks, it is often referred to as one of the most picturesque beaches in the whole BVI. A horseshoe shaped bay is lined with glossy palms offering a perfect setting for a day out. Plus, since the beach is very remote (only accessible by yacht or ferry from Road Town!), it remains quieter than others.
To the east of Jost Van Dyke, you will find the uninhabited Island of Sandy Cay (sometimes referred to as Sandy Spit). A nature reserve, with remote stretches of sand and elegant leaning palm trees in the centre, every direction you look will be a delight for the eyes. Day sail charters operate out of Tortola to make your journey to this paradise isle as quick as possible because trust us, you’ll be wanting to spend every minute of your day here.
Known as the surfer’s paradise, Apple Bay beach is famed for having some of the best waves in the Caribbean. Enjoy some super friendly Caribbean hospitality and live music at the nearby Sebastien’s and Sugar Mill hotels and be embraced by the local small community who will welcome you with open arms and even treat you to a fish fry every Friday! So sit back, relax, and kick your flip flops off at the Bomba Shack bar under the leafy Banyon trees, and admire the impressive surf competitions.
With nearly a mile long shoreline, this stunning beach definitely lives up to its name! This beach offers the perfect classic Caribbean beach day. The eastern end will offer all the traditional food and beverages you could wish for, whereas the western end is more quiet and secluded offering some of the best swimming in the whole BVI. Get ready to be awe-struck by the sheer space and size of this beach, perfect to make you feel as if you're the only person on the whole island.
