Easter is celebrated in various ways in Trinidad and Tobago. Easter follows the end of the Carnival celebrations and the beginning of Lenten Season which Easter is the highlight of said season. It is an important occasion among the locals as in Christian culture it commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent (Lenten Season) begins on the Wednesday after the Carnival (Ash Wednesday) and ends on Easter Sunday.
Easter is celebrated in many ways amongst the community, with one of the main highlights preceding Easter being the celebration of the Holy Weekend in the village of Siparia in southern Trinidad. The streets are full of vendors selling food, clothing and other artefacts.
Fish is one of the main staple foods consumed during Lent, culminating with the Good Friday traditional meal of ground provisions and fish. On Good Friday many locals also enjoy hot cross buns.
There is a range of activities that take place during Easter, including the Easter Bonnet competition where these Easter bonnet parades are held at schools, shopping malls and other venues throughout the country. Kite flying is another activity that has recently grown in popularity, with competitions being held with giveaways and music playing all day long. Finally, many families and friends make it an Easter weekend ritual to camp out on beaches across Trinidad and Tobago. In Trinidad, some of these popular spots include Macqueripe, Maracas, Las Cuevas and Manzanilla beaches in the north, Mayaro beach in the southeast and Los Iros, Quinam and Vessigny beaches in the south. While in Tobago, popular spots include Store Bay, Black Rock, Pigeon Point among others.
Head to the various beaches, including Maracas, Las Cuevas, Mayaro, or Los Iros to join locals who camp out on the beach during the Easter Weekend. There will be music, and fun throughout.
Head to the local mall for a chance to see the Easter Bonnet competitions, and always be on the lookout for the popular kite-flying competitions!
For hotels, many will also celebrate Easter but look at the family-friendly ones for the best celebrations, such as the Starfish Tobago Resort in Scarborough, or the Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort. Both these options offer all-inclusive and are on the beachfront.
