Festivals and events in Trinidad and Tobago in February

If it’s the vibes, the music and the colourful spectacle you are looking for, February is a month-long party, dedicated wholeheartedly to Carnival. As the biggest event in Trinidad, and the most popular in the Caribbean, the streets of Port of Spain come alive with parades, costumes, soca and calypso. With over 300,000 people dancing to the beat of Trinidad, the event takes place on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday every year.

Over in Tobago, things are a lot more traditional; Trinidad holds the name for being home to the most energetic, euphoric and eccentric carnival. Tobagonians like things laid-back, theatrical and meaningful. But don’t be fooled, the days remain jam-packed with events, fetes and parties, just on a more intimate scale down the streets of Scarborough.

Outside of the school holidays and in some of the best weather, Valentine's Day is a great chance to escape to the quieter, more romantic corners of the islands. While most of the islands are celebrating carnival, the intimate spots are more isolated, with like-minded couples looking for the same adventure.

Top places to visit in Trinidad and Tobago in February

Port of Spain is the hub this month as Carnival comes into full swing. Although the whole island will be buzzing, there is no place better to be than the capital as the streets are lined with florescent limbo dancers, traditional calypso and Soca music, steelpans and awesome parades. For a laid-back take on the ever-famous carnival, visit the island of Tobago and experience the more traditional side of the spectacular event.

If you want a break from the bustle, step out to the Hundred Steps Beach, a secluded but beautiful corner of the island. Set at the foot of a lush green cliff, follow the concrete steps to the beach. If adventure is on your agenda this is the beach to journey to - you will find one chunk of the stairwell is missing; climb a rope tied to a tree and see why the trek was worth it.

Alternatively, visit the Englishman’s Bay in Tobago. Well-known for all the right reasons, this valentine's spot, nominated the most romantic place across both islands, is perfect for the couple seeking more privacy. Make the most of the clear and warm waters with some snorkelling and diving to explore the gorgeous reefs.
